We’re all just people here.
Fact is, I can’t think of much branding- or marketing-related copy that I haven’t delivered at some point or another, but I have my favorites. I particularly love and care about creating sublime UX writing, and any writing related to content marketing. It’s because UX writing and content marketing aren’t about selling at people. They’re about giving something useful, sharing stories, making moments of life a bit easier or inspired, and building relationships.
Listen, when we’re all on our deathbeds, we’re not going to give a shit about the fancy thingamabobs we bought or the amazing app we used, but we will care about the joy, love, and knowledge we shared along the way in the relationships we had. I don’t think this is a new concept for most of us, but it’s somehow easy to forget. Especially when we have a product to sell.
Somebody I love more than anyone or anything on the planet used to say to me, “We’re all just people here.” We’re all trying to figure out how to create some contentment in life and not be assholes (ok, there are some exceptions—like Putin or that one ex, but you know what I mean). So, applied to marketing, each of us appreciates the break when we’re not being sold at. And we all know when that’s happening. When we show that we care and share our best, helpful stuff—whatever that might be—it’s often reciprocated. Win-win.
